Train-the-Trainer
Time and again, I have seen skilled, well-intentioned employees "dropped into" the job of trainer - usually because they are really good at the job themselves - but that doesn't necessarily mean that they will be good at training others to do that job!
Like most other things, teaching others is a skill - some people are really good at teaching others and some are not. But the skill of the instructor as well as the design of the course really impact the effectiveness and quality of a training session.
Join me as I share valuable information and tips about how to effectively transfer skills and knowledge to adult learners in an effective, interesting and motivating way.
Upon completion of our "Train-the-Trainer" training workshop you will be able to effectively:
- Identify your personal learning preferences and learning style;
- Understand the benefits of designing training plans that consider individual differences and preferences; and
- Design training plans that move adult learners systematically through a complete learning cycle in order to relate classroom activities to real-world situations.
Here are a few common problems that are often related to poor planning of training sessions:
- Learners feel that the session is moving too quickly or too slowly for their liking;
- Learners don't understand how the classroom situation relates to their specific job or function;
- Your sessions don't run on time - either you're way ahead or way behind;
- Questions from learners derail your session and send it off in a direction that is not productive; and
- Learners get bored due to a lack of variety of training methods used during the session.
These are a just a few of the common AVOIDABLE problems with training sessions! During this 1-day Train-the-Trainer workshop you will learn how to prepare for and design your training sessions so that you and your learners leave the session feeling satisfied, motivated and enlightened. This highly participative, learner-centered Train-the-Trainer workshop will provide you with the tools and skills to improve the effectiveness of the training sessions that you design and/or deliver, whether your audience is 5 or 500 people! You will also have a chance to implement your learnings in a safe and fun environment!
Key Topics Include:
- Learning Styles: David Kolb, an industry expert, has identified four common learning styles. Using a self-evaluation tool, you will identify your personal learning preferences and your preferred "learning style". In doing so, you will become more aware of the learning preferences of others and the benefits of considering these differences when designing training plans.
- The Learning Cycle: David Kolb also suggests that adults may begin a learning process in any one of four phases within the learning cycle and that ideal lesson plans move learners in a systematic way, via activities and questions, through all four of the phases in order to satisfy all of the learning preferences and achieve a well-rounded learning process. You will learn how the "learning styles" and learning cycle relate to each other and how to apply these learnings to course design and delivery.
- The Experiential Design Model: The Experiential Design Model builds on the basis of David Kolb’s work and provides a seven-step approach to follow when developing a lesson plan to accomplish the established learning objectives. The model provides a systematic progression through each of the four phases of the learning cycle. Additional phases are added to provide for introductions to the learning event and to ensure a vehicle for learning level evaluation. You will have an opportunity to implement these learnings using a case study or real work example of your choice.
So, whether your training team is 5 or 50 people strong, this 1-day Train-the-Trainer workshop will help you to ensure that the training sessions that you design value the individual differences and preferences of your learners; that they are motivating and interesting; that they use a variety of teaching tools and exercises; AND that they accomplish the desired learning outcomes!
